RIP Louis Our Big Brave Boy

RIP LOUIS 21ST 0CT 2010 - 5TH AUG 2016

It is with a very heavy heart that we have to advise we lost our beautiful brave boy this morning.

Louis passed away in his sleep at Rutland House, he didn't make it long enough to use the new drug, he simply had enough. The staff at Rutland believe it was probably a blood clot that reached his brain, but we will never really know, but whatever it was that caused it, we take some comfort in the fact he died in his sleep.

We went over to see him yesterday evening and he looked comfortable but he was quite unresponsive. It was clear he had really had enough, but we hoped against all hope that he could hang on until the drug arrived from Holland, sadly that wasn't to be.

We will never forget the impact he had on our lives, with his constant mithering for attention, his demands for runs and new frisbees when he chewed through them, and his love of duck sausages. Our home feels very empty and quiet although Olga is trying her best to make some noise, but it's just not the same.

'His' field still has signs of him tearing round it, and bits of chewed up frisbee are everywhere. We can see his claw marks in the ground where he chased his furries, and although these are causing us pain at the moment I hope in time they will bring us comfort. People thought we were crazy to spend the money we did in trying to fight this illness, but we didn't care, unless you have invited a dog into your family you will never know how this feels.

AIHA is a horrendous disease, it literally strips the life out of our pets, we thought Louis was bullet proof and often said it, maybe we tempted fate - who knows.

This is the last post on Louis blog, I just wish it was from him and not me.

Thank you to everyone who has followed his life through this blog all 3000+ of you, I hope he entertained you and made you smile like he made us smile. We also want to thank everyone for your support and kind words during this difficult journey.

Lots of Love
Louis Mum and Dad...

I'm so sorry to hear the news. Myself and Louis spent a lot of long Saturdays and Sundays together whilst he was hospitalised. I'm glad he went in his sleep, but sorry he went at all. My condolences to yourselves, and your family.

Dear Louis' family - I am so sorry to hear that he is gone. You fought incredibly hard for your lovely boy. It was a blessing that he passed away in his sleep and you did not have to make that unthinkable decision. This happened with two of our dogs and it was a comfort to think of them passing peacefully with no pain or anxiety over any intervention.

I have followed Louis' blog for a long time - he was part of my daily internet routine: 'click on the Louis link to see if he has posted'. The posts always gave me a chuckle - they perfectly captured that funny mix of intelligence and innocence with which dogs seem to view the world. Time and again I could relate as his antics reminded me of our own dogs, both present and long gone (one also a beatiful brown Dobie boy). I shall miss you, Louis. I would like to think you have already found a lovely field with furries at the Rainbow Bridge.

My dear Louis' family

My heart is breaking for you. Our thoughts are with you and Olga at this very sad time. Of course, all of us blog readers were hoping that the new drug would arrive in time and help Louis in his fight against such a horrible disease.

Louis' blog made me laugh so much and I loved the photos of this very handsome boy. His poses were 'so Doberman'! Maybe Olga will learn to write in the course of time . . .

For those of us who have had the privilege of being adopted by a Doberman, we fight tooth and nail to make them better, whatever the cost. A Doberman is not 'just a dog'. A Doberman is a very special being with a fun attitude to life which in turn makes us mere mortals love them and care for them even more.

I hope The Lovely Louis meets up with our Lovely Audi and her predecessors, and they have loads of fun every day chasing furries.

Lots of love, Anne (Hendry) xxx

Am so sorry to hear about Louis, he was a Gem! I have had two rescues from FOND and lost Jakey Boy to Wobblers a couple of years ago, but Ruby came along to help keep me on my toes. My thoughts are with you all, you were amazing at doing what you could to keep that brave Boy going, ultimately though, it was too much for poor Louis and he went in his own way, without you having to make the decision. Run Free over Rainbow Bridge Louis, hope you catch up with Jakey Boy and you can teach him how to chase birds!

Love and thoughts

Karen and Ruby x

Heart felt condolences go out to you, so sorry to hear of your loss which I can totally relate to having lost two Dobermans; one to osteosarcoma and recently an 11 year old rescue to cardiomyopathy. You tried your very best to help him; there is no cost or extent to which you will go to for a member of your family as I have been there too.
I watched his video and he had me clawing back the tears.....to the world he was but a part of it, but to your family he was your world. Run free, Louis. Xx

Thank you to everyone who has commented on Louis's blog over the years and in the recent days since he died. We didn't realise how many people loved his antics and yes we have a huge Dobie sized hole in our lives. Olga is a lost soul at the moment so we are trying to focus on her, but signs of Louis are everywhere we look.

We take comfort in the knowledge that we tried everything to save him, but it was clear that the AIHA wasn't going to let him go. We know he packed a lot into the few years we had him and he did everything was at 100 miles a hour, we were blessed to call him our boy.
